Bottle and Jar Cap Compatibility: Match the Full Neck Finish
Compare five closure systems with exact product links, identify look-alike finishes, and calculate the number of caps your container order requires.
The whole neck finish matters.
The ounce size tells you how much a container holds. The neck finish identifies the closure interface. In a designation such as 28-400, 28 identifies the nominal diameter in millimeters and 400 identifies the finish series. Matching only the first number is not enough.
Continuous-thread and lug closures are different constructions. A lug closure engages separated thread sections; a continuous-thread closure uses a screw-thread system. For background, see SKS Bottle’s neck-finish reference and closure-selection guide.
Match containers and closures by their listed system.
The product links identify the exact items. A matching finish is the starting point; liner, material, tolerances, application torque, and product compatibility still matter.
Three combinations not to assume.
70mm does not mean one lid.
Our range includes 70-400, 70-450G, and 70mm lug products. Keep these as separate purchasing specifications. The jar opening can look similar while requiring a different closure.
38mm OI is not a generic 38-400 match.
Preserve the OI designation when selecting the juice bottle caps in the chart. Do not substitute a closure just because it shares the number 38.
A 28mm shot cap is not automatically 28-400.
A named plug-seal/tamper-evident shot-bottle system is not interchangeable with a Boston round screw cap solely because both say 28mm. Ask us to confirm any substitution by exact SKU.
A liner is part of the specification.
F217, plastisol, and pressure-sensitive liners are different choices, not interchangeable labels. Match the liner to the contents, container, and documented process. The presence of a liner alone does not establish a tamper-evident or shelf-stable package.
Count bottles and caps separately.
Most closures in the chart are sold individually while containers are sold by the case. For two 12-count cases of Boston round bottles, order 24 caps before any chosen reserve. For one case of 392 PET jars, the matching purchase is 392 caps before reserve—not one cap or one unspecified cap case.
Check included-cap listings before adding extras.
16 oz Clear Square Heavy PET Juice Bottle with 210 Included Black Caps (200/Case) is listed with 200 bottles and 210 black caps. That is 10 caps beyond one per bottle. Do not automatically add another 200 caps, and do not assume those included caps fit other bottle families.
Approve the complete package before a production run.
- Record the container SKU, closure SKU, full finish, and liner.
- Obtain samples or a small trial quantity and the relevant supplier specifications.
- Confirm the contents, filling temperature, intended storage, and any processing requirements.
- Follow the closure supplier’s application guidance and inspect the finished seal, opening action, and handling performance.
- Retain the approved combination in your reorder list. Recheck when either component changes.
Do not infer a hot-fill, canning, pressure, or shelf-life rating from a jar name or lid style. Food preservation requires a validated process and packaging specified for that process; this chart is not processing guidance.
