Size, thickness and weight describe different things
A box marked large, 3.5 mil and 1,000 count contains three separate purchasing facts. Large is the size designation. Mils describe material thickness. Count tells you how many individual gloves are inside. A fourth number, grams, may describe glove weight; it should not be read as thickness.
Keep these fields separate on a purchase sheet. It is much easier to catch a substitution when material, size, thickness and quantity each have their own entry than when the request simply says “black gloves.”
What is a mil?
One mil is one-thousandth of an inch: 0.001 inch or 0.0254 millimeter. It is not one millimeter. The following conversions are exact arithmetic; a product’s stated thickness may be nominal or measured at a particular location.
| Listed mils | Inches | Millimeters |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 | 0.0035 | 0.0889 |
| 4 | 0.004 | 0.1016 |
| 8 | 0.008 | 0.2032 |
| 15 | 0.015 | 0.381 |
| 19 | 0.019 | 0.4826 |
Ask where thickness was measured—fingertip, palm or cuff—when making a close comparison. Two labels with the same number are not necessarily describing the same location. And thickness alone does not tell you chemical suitability, cut resistance or safe heat exposure.
Why grams cannot be converted directly into mils
Weight is a measure of the material in the whole glove. Thickness is a measurement at a location or across a specified area. Glove size, length, shape, density and thickness distribution all affect the relationship. A 5.5-gram glove is not a 5.5-mil glove.
Do not use the shipping weight of a box to infer glove thickness. That weight may include packaging and a different glove count. Request the manufacturer’s thickness specification if it matters to the job. Our nitrile comparison uses the listed mil specifications rather than guessing from grams.
A practical fit checklist
- Use the manufacturer’s measurement method and size chart when available.
- Try the glove on clean, dry hands without pulling hard on one small point.
- Open the hand, make a gentle fist and check for excessive tension across the knuckles.
- Check for loose fingertips that interfere with handling.
- Handle a representative object safely and confirm that the cuff stays comfortable.
- Try the adjacent size or a different style if the first option fails the task.
One size does not fit every worker, and a size label can fit differently between materials or manufacturers. Keep the approved size by employee or workstation so reordering reflects actual use.
Troubleshoot tearing before changing the whole order
| Observation | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Tears while putting gloves on | Dry hands, donning technique, fit, nails or jewelry, storage condition. |
| Too much loose material | Size and style; do not assume thicker means better fitting. |
| Tears during work | Task suitability, contact with edges, glove condition and appropriate protective specification. |
| Repeated failures in one box or lot | Stop using the affected stock, retain lot details and contact the supplier. |
Record whether the issue is donning, fit or task exposure. Then make one change at a time. Use the buying guide to compare waste and cost once the glove performs appropriately.
