Vacuum Bags & Pouches: Sizes, Thickness and Buying Guide
KEVIDKO Knowledge Base / Vacuum Packaging
Vacuum Packaging · KEVIDKO
The right pouch starts with your machine—and the food you pack.
Compare 15 vacuum bag and pouch sizes, understand 3 mil film, and plan case quantities for meat markets, carnicerías, processors, commercial kitchens and specialty food businesses.
Chamber pouches vs. external-suction bags
“Vacuum bag” and “vacuum pouch” are often used interchangeably. Neither name tells you whether a package works with your sealer. Start with the machine model and the bag construction it requires.
Chamber Vacuum Sealers
The filled pouch goes inside a chamber. These machines can use compatible smooth pouches. Check the usable seal-bar length, chamber dimensions, filled-package height and supported film specifications.
External-Suction Vacuum Sealers
The bag stays outside the machine while its opening sits in the sealing area. These machines typically need textured or embossed bags that provide channels for air removal. A smooth pouch is not an automatic substitute.
Equipment reference: Avid Armor explains why bag construction affects vacuum performance. Always follow your specific machine manual.
How to choose a vacuum pouch size
A flat bag must wrap around a three-dimensional product. A cut that looks smaller than the listed dimensions can still be too thick to fit comfortably. Product weight alone is not a reliable size chart: a compact roast and several flat portions can weigh the same and need different bags.
- Measure a representative portion. Record its length, width and thickness in the arrangement you actually pack.
- Allow room for loading and sealing. Leave the clean, flat sealing area required by your equipment. Do not size the bag right up to the food edge.
- Check the usable opening. Confirm how the listed dimensions are measured and account for side seals; nominal bag dimensions are not guaranteed usable interior dimensions.
- Check the machine. The open edge must fit the usable seal bar. On a chamber machine, the filled package must also fit inside the chamber.
- Trial the complete workflow. Evaluate loading, seal consistency, labeling and handling before standardizing a size across production.
Build your shortlist by width first, then compare lengths. For example, the range includes 10-inch formats in 12-, 15-, 18- and 22-inch lengths. More length does not solve a bag that is too narrow.

What does 3 mil mean?
A mil is one thousandth of an inch. A 3 mil specification equals 0.003 inch; it does not mean 3 millimeters. The products in this guide are all listed at 3 mil.
Thickness is one purchasing variable. Film construction, seal quality, product shape and handling also matter. A thicker pouch is not automatically compatible with your machine, and thickness alone does not establish a cooking temperature, barrier performance or puncture rating.
Comparing 3 mil vs. 4 mil vacuum bags?
Ask what problem the change needs to solve: sharp edges, handling damage, package fit or a process specification. This guide links verified 3 mil products. If you need a heavier film or another construction, ask KEVIDKO about sourcing options and provide your current bag specification and machine model.
For bone-in cuts or irregular products, confirm the appropriate pouch and any protective packaging with our team. Do not treat “Triple Seal” as a guarantee that a bag is bone-proof or suitable for every application.
Build the pouch order around your operation
Meat Markets & Carnicerías
Separate portion packs from larger cuts. Record the pouch size used for each recurring product, and trial irregular or bone-in items separately. Complete the counter order with the Meat Market, Carnicería & Meat Processor Supplies Guide.
Small Processors & Game Processing
Build a size mix from actual cuts and batch volumes. Track seasonal peaks, rejected packages and time spent loading. Keep a tested specification for each product instead of asking staff to improvise with the nearest bag.
Restaurants & Meal Preparation
Standardize portion arrangements and labels so packages stack and rotate predictably. Storage packaging and cooking packaging require separate checks; request an explicit time-and-temperature rating for sous vide or other heated use.
Specialty Food & Market Vendors
Check presentation, label space and transport handling in your trial. If you sell at events, use our Farmers Market Vendor Packaging & Supplies Guide to plan the rest of your setup.
Food handling still matters. Vacuum sealing does not replace required refrigeration, freezing or your operation’s food-safety process. Follow product-specific storage instructions and approved procedures. See USDA refrigeration guidance.
Compare cases by usable output
Cost per pouch = case price ÷ pouches per case. A 500-count case and a 1,000-count case are different quantities. Include applicable delivery charges when comparing delivered cost.
For production planning, start with expected packages, add your own trial-based allowance for setup and rejected bags, then subtract usable stock. Round the remainder up to full cases for each size.
A worked purchasing example
Suppose you expect to pack 1,200 portions, choose a 5% planning allowance, and have 160 usable pouches on hand. You need 1,200 × 1.05 − 160 = 1,100 additional pouches. That means two 1,000-count cases or three 500-count cases of a compatible, correctly sized product. The 5% allowance is an example, not a recommended failure rate.
Before-you-order checklist
- Sealer make, model and required bag construction
- Tested bag dimensions and usable seal area
- Film thickness and application requirements
- Weekly usage by size, usable stock and supplier lead time
- Case count, delivered cost and storage space
- Delivery address and the applicable free-delivery requirements
Set a reorder point from expected use during replenishment lead time plus a reserve appropriate to your business. Keep separate counts for each size; spare large bags do not necessarily replace the smaller pouch your line uses every day.
Vacuum packaging questions, answered
Will these pouches work with my FoodSaver or other countertop sealer?
Do not assume compatibility from the name “vacuum bag.” Many external-suction machines need embossed or textured bags. Share the exact model and the product you are considering so we can confirm the match.
Can I use these bags for sous vide, boiling or retort processing?
The listings used for this guide do not establish a cooking or retort rating. Request documentation for the exact pouch and your process before using it with heat. A 3 mil thickness is not a temperature rating.
What size bag holds a pound of meat?
There is no single reliable answer based only on weight. Measure the portion’s shape and thickness, allow the sealing space required by your machine, and trial the size with the actual product.
Do all sizes come in 1,000-count cases?
No. The current range includes both 500- and 1,000-count cases. The size chart above identifies each listing’s case count.
Can you source vacuum packaging I cannot find online?
Yes—tell us the dimensions, construction, thickness, application, machine model and expected usage. Our shop displays only a small fraction of our stocked items and capabilities. We stock thousands of items and source new products for clients daily; our team can investigate the specification you need.
