Trash Bag Size Guide: Gallons, Dimensions and Bin Fit
Choose trash bag sizes by bin dimensions, not gallons alone. Compare 12–16, 13, 33, 45 and 55 gallon options and troubleshoot slipping or tight liners.
What size trash bag fits your bin?
Start with a bag that already fits well, if you have one. Lay an unused bag flat and record its width and length, then retain the product specification for repeat orders. The gallon designation is a useful shopping filter, but container shape and height determine whether a liner actually works.
A tall narrow bin and a shorter wide bin can hold the same volume. They do not necessarily use the same bag. This is why a nominal 23-gallon slim container should not automatically be paired with whichever bag has the closest gallon number.
- Measure around the outside of the rim. This is the opening the bag must fit over, including any projecting lip.
- Measure the bin’s height and bottom footprint. The liner must reach the base instead of hanging from its folded-over edge.
- Allow room to fold over and close. Leave enough material for your tie or closure routine without excessive unused film.
- Confirm the bag’s dimension convention. Gussets and seal construction can affect how a listed width should be interpreted.
- Trial a normal load. Check installation, filling, removal and closure with the waste that station generates.
A useful width check
For a simple flat bag, twice the flat width approximates the opening circumference. If your bin rim measures 60 inches around, a 30-inch flat width only matches that circumference on paper and leaves no fitting allowance. Use this to reject undersized candidates, then confirm the manufacturer’s dimensions and trial a roomier fit. It is not a guaranteed sizing formula for every bag construction.

Fix the fit before buying a thicker bag
The Bag Falls into the Bin
Check whether the liner reaches the bottom and has enough length to fold over the rim. Also check any retaining band or holder. More thickness does not solve insufficient length.
The Opening Is Too Tight
Compare the flat width with the actual rim circumference. Do not stretch a too-small opening around a projecting lip; shortlist a wider format.
There Is Excess Material Everywhere
A bag can work while still being unnecessarily large. Trial a closer fit that retains enough length for closure and enough width for easy installation.
The Bag Tears During Removal
Check load, protruding waste, rough bin edges and trapped air around the liner. Evaluate material and gauge as well as dimensions. Do not use a larger capacity label as a substitute for a suitable load specification.
Create a liner standard for every location
Record the bin model or measured dimensions, room or station, liner SKU, gauge, case count and changes per day. Keep that information beside your reorder list. A janitorial team servicing several properties can maintain a small tested assortment without forcing one bag onto every container.
