All You Need To Know About Folding a Pizza Box

When your pizzeria gets an order from a customer, you and your workers want them to receive a high-quality pizza. To do that, you deliver it in a pre-folded box. You wouldn’t want a customer’s order ruined because of an unreliable pizza box!

This can be a problem if you haven’t committed the process of folding a pizza box to memory. Fortunately, the blog can help by teaching you all you need to know about folding a pizza box. Your boxes will stay sturdy, long after the customer has opened them.

Pick an Ideal Spot for Folding

Before bending the parts of a pizza box into place, find an ideal spot with a flat surface for folding. Additionally, make sure that this spot is clean. You don’t want the outside of the box to absorb pizza sauce before it reaches the customer! Confirming that the area is spotless will ensure it has an immaculate appearance when you hand it over to your client.

Put the Box Down Flat

One last step before beginning the folding process is to lay the box down flat in your chosen area. Quickly examine the box to see if any parts are missing, such as flaps that will help you during the folding process.

If any are gone, you should get a new box, as you’ll likely have trouble folding this one together. It is also important to keep the outside of the box with your restaurant’s logos facing downward. Otherwise, you will end up folding your box together with its interior on the outside.

Begin With the Bottom Half

A pizzeria chef stands in the kitchen folding a pizza box together. Next to him is a large oven for the pizza.

Now, we can begin with the actual folding process. Although you may think you need to start with the top half of the pizza box, which features your restaurant’s name and logo on its opposite side, start with the bottom half instead. You should find side panels on the right and left sides of this portion of the box.

Fold the panels inwards, and keep in mind that some pizza boxes may feature side panels with tabs. Bend those downward, and slip the tabs into the slots located at the bottom of the pizza box. Doing so will prevent the box from falling apart after you place the pizza inside. You should also find a lower flap on the bottom half. Fold that part in to keep the warm pizza inside the box.

Move to the Top Half

After finishing with the bottom half, you can turn your attention to the top portion. Begin folding it forward so that it bends over the bottom half of the box. Like the bottom half, the top half should have side panels on its right and left sides.

Fold those inward far enough so that they end up inside the box when you lower the top half over the bottom half. Once you complete this step, the side flaps of the bottom half should be outside of the box. The top portion should also have a small flap at the top. Fold that inward so that when you completely close the box, it is inside, while the bottom half’s lower flap is on the outside.

Additional Steps

Two green plastic pizza savers sit side by side. One sits on its legs, while the other sits on its side.

Now that you know all you need to know about folding a pizza box, you can learn some additional steps to verify your work and ensure the pizza does not sustain any damage. First, give the box a good shake to confirm it won’t collapse as it travels from your pizzeria to the customer.

You can also place a tabletop pizza saver inside the box, which you will use once you place the pizza inside. This plastic item will provide a sturdy barrier between the warm, fresh pizza and the inside ceiling of your pizza box so that the two don’t make contact.

What Your Customers Can Do With Their Pizza Boxes

When your customers finish with the pizza boxes that you folded with care, they may feel tempted to toss them in the trash. However, you can advise them on ways to dispose of them or use them more responsibly.

Send Them to a Recycling Plant

Your customers can send used pizza boxes to a recycling plant instead of throwing them out. Corrugated pizza boxes are suitable for recycling after removing food waste. By doing so, you’re encouraging customers to partake in green initiatives rather than letting waste sit at a dump site.

Make Art With the Boxes

If your clients are feeling creative, they can also use the pizza boxes for artwork. The box’s material will provide them with a sturdy “canvas” for painting on. They can also mount other works onto it before hanging it up. You may even want to ask customers to bring in their art so that you can decorate your establishment!

Craft a Costume

When Halloween arrives and your customers need to craft a costume, they can turn to a pizza box for material. For example, they can use corrugated cardboard to build armor if they want to go to a party dressed as a samurai. Alternatively, they can leave the box intact and dress as a pizza delivery person. They have nearly limitless options when it comes to using their box to create an outfit for the spooky season.

Elevate a Laptop

Some of your clients may love their laptops but feel that they would be more productive and sit with better posture if they put them on stands. Instead of going to a store and buying one, they can make one with their pizza box. By making several alterations to the box, they can create a stand that positions their screens at eye level and lets them sit comfortably as they work.

After learning how to fold a pizza box properly, you can deliver exceptional pies to your customers without issue! They may even feel tempted to keep them and utilize some of the suggestions above. Use this information to help your pizzeria excel and outperform its competitors with its savory offerings in your market.
